Using Blab to Create Unique Content [VIDEO INSIDE]

Just this morning Bess Auer and I hosted a show on Blab. If you’re not familiar with Blab, it’s a cool new video platform that works with Twitter in the like of Periscope, yet can allow for up to four people to be shown “Brady Bunch” style at once. My first time being on a Blab was with Bess the week of Florida Blog Con. We got on there to talk about the upcoming conference, the speakers, what attendees could expect and more. Viewers are able to sign in via Twitter, and engage with us and others via the chat bar on the right and ask questions, comments, share and more.

Below is a Blab from this morning where we spoke with Joshua Johnson, Dan McGaw, Chef Dennis, and more about how to use Blab, as well as other ways to tell a story about your brand or initiative online. It was a great show and I insist you click play to watch and listen.

Driving Around Downtown Orlando

This weekend I wanted to take some time and test out my GoPro accessories while driving around Orlando. I drove around Lake Eola, Orange Ave, and more to see what would capture from the window of my car. While there are some bumpy roads and smoother ones I think it held up pretty good. Only bad thing was it was pretty early in the afternoon so the brightness levels aren’t the best when the sun is in the video. This is obvious, but not much I could do to adjust the mounting while driving.

There were a couple of nice angles though, and I’ll be trying this more to get a better views like turning around street corners.

#1 Facebook posts need to occur on a regular basis to be effective.  Most people are logged on during the prime time hours of 5-9pm.  You can create quick posts about a new product or service, a free service tip or even ones that are relevant to seasonal time frames.  For example, “Stay warmer longer and out of the cold less with a new SmartStart remote starter!”

#2 Blogging via your website is easy enough by adding a few paragraphs with information specific to your business or service.  Adding  fresh content on a regular basis will give you consistent indexing on major search engines.  You can do this yourself or consider asking a friend or family member that’s a pretty good writer to put a brief article together that gives you an authoritative voice about your particular niche and hopefully a faithful following!

#3 Twitter posts are the easiest but seem to be the hardest to keep up with.  Why I don’t know.  But I do know is that prioritizing a few Tweets per week can help keep your business relevant in this social medium.  If you just don’t have the time, there are social media management programs to help schedule postings on a daily or weekly basis.

#4 Hootsuite is a free social media management tool can help you to schedule and manage multiple Social Media networks  and your daily/weekly postings.  It’s free up to 5 networks and then becomes a paid service.  This is a great no cost/low cost option and it’s super easy to use.  Another option would be to consider asking a college student to do it for a few bucks so they can leverage it as professional Social Media management experience.

Don’t be afraid to ask your favorite and most long-term customers to add reviews to your business profile which helps increase your ratings.  Remember, you will look better to consumers with 3 great reviews rather than someone who has none.  But make sure you monitor your profile regularly in case someone puts something on there that’s less than becoming.  You want to be able respond timely to anything that’s said which could affect your business’ reputation.

#8 A Free YouTube Channel for your business will allow you to upload your videos and market via your own channel! Plus you can really leverage this medium by programming certain settings and keywords to make your channel appear in people’s online searches. Not sure what kind of video to shoot?  Consider educating your consumers via a Tips Video with several how-to’s  or why choose your business infomercials. For example, if you’re an automobile service business, give a how-to-tell if your tire has a real flat or if it’s just the outdoor temperature affecting the pressure.

-Keep in mind that with these resources, there’s no “set it & forget it” recipe.  Even with Hootsuite, you’ll need to follow-up on your postings to check for comments and post responses to those consumer comments.
-You aren’t going to see dollar-for-dollar return on these efforts & the time investment you put into it.  But I am confident that within 6 months, you will be surely see the fruits of your labors with leads and consumer recognition.

It’s All About the Hook in Link Baiting!

What in the world is Link Baiting?
In the simplest form, it is the act of creating any content within a website, advertisement or blog that is designed to gain attention and more importantly, encourages people to link to its original form.  The goal of link baiting is to leverage content to become an extremely powerful form of marketing.  Some feel it’s another tool to acquire the currency of SEO.  Let’s talk about how it can be the biggest fish in the pond of SEO, why it’s important to get others hooked into it and then what it really reels in for you and your business.

To completely understand its meaning you have to understand what is at the heart of its composition.  Link-baiting goes way beyond words within the content of your website, advertisement and/or blog.  Aside from text, it can also be an image, audio or video clip.  Any of these can be effective link baits as long as they are interesting enough to catch people’s attention.  And once someone has clicked onto one of these vehicles, you want them to share it and hence great amount of traffic for your content.  And that’s the goal-for some part of your content to become the Los Angeles freeway at 5pm.  Think about how popular blogs have become that have infographics or videos. Videos gone viral on You Tube can take a no-name person or product and spread it like wildfire. Its all about engagement, the tantalizing, wiggly worm on the hook just waiting to be nibbled.
Now that you understand what it is, where & how do you use it?

What-For blogs you definitely need a strong & compelling headline to capture the readers’ attention and engage them.  Take for instance this blog.  “Link baiting” is a popular, strongly researched topic.  So having a witty “hook” title will return good traffic once its out there.  And while the “body” of the work needs to be strong and compelling to keep you entertained, its important to hook you right off the bat with the title.  If a title doesn’t create intrigue then you won’t get the readership; and without readership, your content just floats along lonely in the sea of the worldwide web…you don’t want it to be Dory in Nemo singing “keep on swimming” – lol.
Where -You want your content on all major Social Media sites to ensure good dissemination.  Period – it’s that simple.

  • Humor hooks – Tell a funny story or a joke. A bizarre picture of your subject or mocking cartoons can also prove to be link bait.
  • Evil hooks – Saying something unpopular or mean may also yield a lot of attention. Writing about something that is not appealing about a product or a popular blogger.
  • Tool hooks – Create some sort of tool that is useful enough that people link to it.
  • Widgets hooks – A badge or tool that can be placed or embedded on other websites, with a link included.
  • Unique content hooks – This hook is intended for people that are in need of unique content or articles for traffic or AdSense revenue. This became popular after Google implemented Duplicate Contents Filter and sites with duplicate contents saw fall in traffic. To use this hook, you have to create unique content and give it out to bloggers and webmasters with an obligation to link back to your site.
  • Curated hooks – A content that links out to other websites by citing them as resources naturally attracts linkers and have high chances of going viral as the mentioned sites in the link bait are most likely to link to the site and share it through their own networks.

Always remember that your content must be current (ripping something tantalizing from the headlines of major reporting forums such as nightly news, respectable magazines or newspapers) and is a great form of SEO currency.  Don’t let your creativity dwindle when it comes to achieving this objective.  Remember, the ultimate goal of all this is to create buzz and get people to share your content and its links – which hopefully hooks bank for your business.
